Acajou has typical red-brown heartwood with pale sapwood. Its grain is straight and interlocked. Its timber is easily mild providing good attractive finishes. It is a wood of great versatility.
The heartwood of freshly sawn Acajou has a pink color. After exposure to light the color changes to pinkish red or brown red. After years, the color could be somewhat irregular. When fresh, the color difference between sapwood and heartwood is not great, but after exposure to the light, it becomes much clearer. The wood structure is often irregular and interlocked. The texture is medium fine to coarse.
Very easy to work with hand and machines, torn and chipped grain is common with figured material. Easy to finish and takes an excellent polish. It can be sliced and rotary cut into fine veneer.
